Film Study Individual Work

My SEXXY analysis

1 Assassins Creed Valhalla
Ashraf Ismali uses a long shot extremely well in the new cinematic trailer for the much anticipated Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. We see this at the very start of the game, In a scene where to kids interact with a father figure. This shows us that even the vikings, supposedly this cruel warrior race are also people with families and are not ruthless savages. The director did this to show the feud between the Templar and the assassins. Combined with the lighting in the background makes for a truly “nice” scene in a dark trailer. This doesn't remind me of another trailer but a scene in another game. In Assassin’s Creed 2 there is a cut scene after climbing a building with your brother. Where you see the two bonding in a Long Shot with the background of there home (Florence).

2 Borderlands 2
Paul Hellquist used many shots incredibly well in the Borderlands 2 trailer. Medium shots are what made that trailer. For example right at the start of the trailer, barely even 5 seconds in we see a medium shot of the main antagonist. This makes us understand that the antagonist plays a massive role in the game and has a big ego. The director did this to show that the evil mind of the first game is back and even more menacing than ever. Combined with the upbeat music and the words he was saying made for a truly incredible trailer. This reminds of the trailer for Ghost of Tsushima, where the antagonist is revealed in a very menacing way/ With a medium shot zooming in on his face while he speaks of his power.

3 God of War
Cory Barlog made easily one of the best games ever. The marketing for the game was nothing but phenomenal. Im talking about God of war of course and its award winning trailer that used the probably the best medium shot of all time. We see this part way through the story trailer. There is a doorway with a man standing in the shadows when he comes out it is Kratos. This makes the audience feel extraordinarily happy. Seeing the iconic character step forth was truly a good moment for gaming history. This was done to make the audience extremely happy but also to make fans hungry for the new game. Combined with the music in the background the scene really made for an impactful reunion. This reminds me of a scene in what was the most anticipated game of all time…. The last of us 2 trailer shows a fan favorite return the same way.

4 Jumanji The Next Level
Jake Kasdan did a stand up job in the trailer for Jumanji The Next Level. With the use of action/full body shots. We see this a minute and a half into the film where Milo Walker played by Kevin Hart tells the others to look at his thighs. This shows the audience that there will be much comedy in the movie. Combined with the music it makes for a smooth transition from comedy to action. This reminds me of a scene in Shazam’s trailer where Shazam says look at me in the same shot.

My SEXXXY Analysis

Analysis 1 (Rocketman)
Dexter Fletcher used Medium shots extraordinarily well in the film Rocketman. We see this when Elton John tells his friend that he is sorry. This shows the connection between Elton and his friend.
It also shows the audience that he is really sorry. The director did this to show the emotion in the scene, it gave us a clear image that Elton being sorry. Combined with Elton’s iconic song Tiny Dancer. It creates an upsetting yet impactful scene that keeps us excited to see what happens next. This reminds me of a scene in Avengers Endgame where you can see Tony Stark on the floor.

Analysis 2 (Walk the Line)
Close up shots were used brilliantly in the film Walk the line. We see this in a collection of scenes where Cash tries to kiss June. This shows the audience what June and Cash are feeling. Cash is feeling attracted to June and June isn't sure as to what she wants. The director did this to show us the audience the emotion and feeling between the two characters and that they were getting closer. Combined with how the song Ring of Fire simmers in the background, It creates a very impactful scene for the trailer. This makes people want to see how there love blossoms. You can see this in A star is born where close up shots are used in a similar way between the two main characters.

What is film theory? What is film criticism? What is the Auteur Theory?

What is film theory?
Film theory is a set of scholarly approaches within the academic discipline of film or cinema studies that historically began by questioning the formal essential attributes of ever-evolving cinematic media.
and that now provides conceptual frameworks for understanding film's relationship to reality, the other arts, individual viewers, and society at large. Film theory is not to be confused with general film criticism, or film history, though these three disciplines interrelate.

What is film criticism?
Film criticism is the analysis and evaluation of films and the film medium. The concept is often used interchangeably with that of film reviews. A film review implies a recommendation aimed at consumers, however not all film criticism takes the form of reviews.
